Buying a bong for the first time can feel like more decisions than it should be. Walk along our glass wall in Richland Hills and you will see small beakers next to tall straight tubes, plain pieces next to ones with two or three chambers. They all do the same job. The differences come down to a handful of things, and once you know them the choice gets easy.
Start With Size
Bigger is not automatically better. A tall bong holds more smoke, which some people like, but it also takes more pull to clear and more space to store. A smaller piece is easier to clean, easier to keep steady on a table and easier to take with you.
- Small pieces suit beginners, small apartments and anyone who wants quick sessions.
- Medium pieces are the most popular all-rounders.
- Tall pieces suit people who already know they like a bigger hit.
Glass Thickness
Glass thickness is the single biggest factor in how long a bong lasts. Thicker borosilicate glass handles bumps and temperature changes better. Thin glass can be lighter and cheaper, but it is more likely to crack if it gets knocked over.
When you are in the shop, pick a piece up. A solid feel and a heavy base are good signs. Ask us about thickness and we can point out which pieces on the shelf are the sturdiest.
Shape of the Base
Beaker bases are wide at the bottom, so they are stable and hold a little more water. Straight tubes are simpler and pull smoothly. Round bases look classic but tip more easily. If the bong will live on a coffee table with pets or kids around, a beaker base is the safe pick.
Joint Size and Downstems
The joint is where the bowl or downstem connects. The common sizes are 10 mm, 14 mm and 18 mm, and the joint can be male or female. Most mid-size bongs use 14 mm.
This matters when you buy replacement parts. A bowl or downstem has to match both the size and the gender of the joint. If you are not sure what you have, bring the piece in or take a clear photo of the joint and we will match it at the counter.
Percolators
A percolator is an extra piece of glass inside the bong that breaks the smoke into smaller bubbles as it passes through water. More bubbles mean more contact with water, which many people find makes the hit smoother and cooler.
- No percolator: simplest to clean, strongest pull.
- Tree or showerhead percolators: noticeably smoother, still easy to clean.
- Multiple chambers: smoothest, but more glass to clean and more to break.
If you are new to glass, one percolator is a good middle ground. You get a smoother hit without making cleaning a chore.
Ice Catchers and Splash Guards
Some tubes have small glass pinches in the neck that hold ice cubes. Ice cools the smoke further. Splash guards stop water from reaching your mouth. Neither is essential, but both are nice to have on a taller piece.
Cleaning
A clean bong tastes better and lasts longer. Change the water after every session, and give the glass a proper clean once a week if you use it often. Isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt, shaken inside the piece, remove most buildup. Rinse well with warm water afterward, not hot, so the glass does not crack from the temperature change.
We carry cleaning solutions, caps and brushes in our accessories lane, right next to the glass.
Our Advice at the Counter
Tell us how often you smoke, where the piece will live and how much you want to spend, and we will narrow the wall down to a few good options. You can see every piece up close before you buy, and if you need a replacement bowl, downstem or grinder later, we keep those in stock too. See what is on the shelf on our bongs and glass page.
Glass and accessories are sold to adults 21 and over with a valid photo ID. Kush Kingdom Richland Hills is open every day from 8 AM to midnight.
